Oru Naal Varum - Review ***/5
The last Malayalam film I saw (Pokkiri Raja) and its present status at the box office shocked me. Its, simply put, pure STUPIDITY. I mean how many people enjoy this kind of shit? Its a mystery how such no-brainers fare well at the box office and is still running in the theartres. ORU NAAL VARUM was more than just a relief. I was happy as it didn't turn out to be another soapy masala concotion but a movie which is theme-n-story driven just like back in the 80's and 90's which is considered the Golden age of Malayalam Cinema.
The magical pairing of Mohanlal & Sreenivasan has given us some memorable films to date. This would certainly be among the list. Sreenivasan has written a decent solid script, which is very rare these days, skillfully woven with different elements and themes. The director should have opted for a better, stylized and a more modern narration of the story but relies on the same old formulas.
Mohanlal is amazing, as usual. He dons yet another naughty, quirky and witty character. Sreenivasan has done his part well too. But, yes, they do remind us of one of their earlier roles. Sameera Reddy cast as Mohanlal's wife is nothing more than a pretty face strolling around, as the character isn't made very clear or is under developed. A couple of interesting twists in the script makes the film more than just a watchable one.
