Lets Call It a Not-So-Bright Day.
The day appeared to be dark. It was 9 o' clock in the morning and there were no clouds in the sky, no solar eclipse or anything natural that could render a city, otherwise so bright, quite dark. The little city of Dorkandha that was once so restless, hectic and bustling with people, cars and buses, people colliding with people, people colliding with cars, cars colliding with buses so on and so forth, is quite literally dead for the first time, ever since the terrible Vacuum Cleaner massacre that wiped out nearly everyone in city 20 years ago. But this time there was no massacre. The day before, had been a normal day and even Zehra, the best psychic in the city, couldn't foresee what was coming, except one man. He was your everyday guy or even worse. He was the kind of guy who would go to the extent of buying another iPad if he accidentally dropped one on the floor, even if it didn’t get damaged, so that he could spare himself off the tiresome job of bending down and picking it up. Of course he couldn’t afford to buy one. He could barely pay his monthly rent for his room. He was sleeping tightly within his blankets on a very nice bed unaware of what was happening in the city outside. And then out of all the possible things that could’ve happened, no one, not even Zehra, the best psychic in the town, could’ve possibly foreseen what was about to happen. He woke up.
He squinted around for his alarm clock but then he remembered that he threw it out the window last day. Last day had been a disaster; his girlfriend left him. He looked around wondering how he woke up so early in the morning. He got up from his bed and looked outside the window. It looked like dawn but deep down within him it didn’t feel like dawn. He looked up at the sky through the window. Yes it did look like dawn. The sky was clear but where was the sun, he wondered. Actually it’s been a while since he had ever seen a rising sun and was almost at the verge of believing it was a myth. He went to the bathroom, dehydrated and went back to bed. He closed his eyes for a while. He couldn’t sleep. He looked at the clock on the wall, near the bathroom. It said 9.05. “Stupid clock” he said. He decided to go have a bath and for the first time after a while enjoy the early morning. He brushed his teeth, had a bath and got out of his room which was in a building owned by a guy to whom he owes the last month’s rent. He decided to have some tea. He went outside. He was surprised to see only very few people talking amongst themselves. The streets were empty. He went towards the small restaurant which was open but empty. He noticed the owner of the restaurant among the people who were standing there discussing some serious matter. He went towards them.
“What? What’s happening?” he asked.
“What’s happening??” they asked back in chorus.
“Ok am I missing something here?”
“Look at the time Sood?”
“Its 6…something” he said, looking at ‘his’ wrist watch ‘which’ wasn’t there.
“Either the whole world got the time wrong or it’s something else” they said.
“I don’t understand…” but before he could complete the sentence he remembered the time, his clock showed. “What???”
“Man its 9.45 and its still looks like dawn and MY
GOD, we can’t see the sun…..”
He interrupted “I am so…. is it a prank you’re pulling off on me??” he asked.
“See for yourself” said the owner and showed his watch and the others followed too.
“I can’t believe this. I must be dreaming. The sun rises in the east doesn’t it?? So that’s east” he said pointing at the east and all he could see was the amazingly clear, sky. He ran towards the east. He still couldn’t see the sun. He felt like he was dreaming. He was feeling dizzy. “No way, what the **** is happening?????” he said to himself. He looked around. Everything appeared to be real. It wasn’t a dream.
Just then there was there was bright and blinding flash of light. It stayed for a second or two.
“What the hell going on?” said one of them standing next to him.
“Its Dooms Day!!!” said another which got nods of appreciation from others and they all started to smile. "Alright folks! Lets call it a day. Not a very bright day is it?" said another and everyone began laughing. Ice cream seller sold chocolate ice creams to all the kids running by. Sood bought one for himself. He looked up and sun appeared to twinkle. He hummed “Twinkle Twinkle little star. How I wonder what the **** you are?” All the kids around him started to sing along with him. “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star How I wonder what the **** you are?” All the kids around him showed their middle fingers to the sky. Sun stopped twinkling for a while and suddenly there was another song erupting from somewhere else. It sounded familiar. He started running towards the source. But before he could reach there the singing stopped. He looked at himself and saw that he was naked. “Holy shit” he thought. He started running to find a place he can hide himself. He told Zehra the best psychic in the town that he was naked and asked her where he could hide. The Zehra asked him to get into her car and he sat on the driver’s seat and started driving. Zehra warned that he would loose his manhood if he didn’t drive faster. He placed his file on his office table and she placed a big crystal ball on his lap and asked him to concentrate on it. Sood began to feel a little sleepy.
“Ok I am calling it a day” he said.
“A not-so-bright day. Don’t you agree?’ asked Zehra.
“Whatever”
He got up from his seat and decided to sleep on the floor. He found his pillow and blanket and started sleeping. Just then, there was another flash of light. He woke up and had his breakfast and went for work.
